In my last post, I talked about the communication plan. The natural starting point for most communication professionals, experienced as well as inexperienced. I would like to add, don’t overplan. No matter how great a plan you make – it is what you actually get out there that matters. The plan is just a tool to help you achieve this.
And in some cases, you’ll succeed better and faster by simply getting the job done and don´t overplan. In cases a new matter rises that falls into existing strategies, for example. You have the choice of leaning into whatever plan or strategy you already have in place. I have also witnessed some skilled communication professionals getting the work done in full scale without having a plan written down. But when you ask them, they have everything I talk about in the planning and strategy posts crystal clear in their head.
Only difference is, they didn’t write it down. Fine. As long as everybody is on board with all those strategic decisions that are required along the way. Problem is, in most organizations you can’t expect all stakeholders to have this kind of comprehensive view on the communications matters. Or to remember what you talked about, and even what you decided on together. They just have too many things top of mind. In those cases, it is better to have a plan with a handshake.
